Who Pays Child Support

Child support is payable by the parent without the care of the child to the parent who is caring for the child. In most cases the non-custodial parent pays child support to the custodial parent. If there is bona fide 'shared parenting' arrangement each parent pays child support to the other parent based upon their respective incomes. The paying parent does not provide or give gifts or trade-offs (for example food or clothing) in place of child support. A court may order a parent who is not a biological parent to pay child support if the person stands in the place of a parent.
